Our Alachua County Judge

Jon "JR" Ramsey
Jon "JR" Ramsey was born in March 1984, in the small town of York, Nebraska. By the age of two, Jon’s parents had moved the family to his father’s hometown of Miami, Florida. It is in Miami where JR grew up and had his childhood. Both of Jon’s parents were teachers before retiring. One of Judge Ramsey’s grandfathers also worked as a high school math teacher, while his other grandfather proudly served in the United States Air Force before retiring and working as a postal worker. Jonathan’s family has a tradition of serving the public.
Jon received his undergraduate degree from FSU while also attending classes at Florida A&M University. When not in the classroom, Jonathan followed his passion for sports. He not only routinely played intramurals but also worked at the University’s newspaper in their sports department while also volunteering for the sports department of the University’s radio station. After graduating from FSU, Jon followed his love of sports back to his hometown of Miami where he served as a paid intern with Florida Marlins broadcasting department. Although Jonathan found the job enjoyable, he felt unsatisfied and wanted to look for a career that enabled him to give back to his community.
With this in mind, Jon moved to Gainesville, Florida to pursue a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Florida. After receiving his Masters’ degree, JR chose to stay in Gainesville and attend law school at the University of Florida Levin College of Law.
After law school, Jon began his legal career at the State Attorney’s Office here in Gainesville. He was offered jobs in other parts part of Florida, but JR wanted to ensure Alachua County was going to be home, for himself, and his future family. Jon served us as Assistant State Attorney from 2012 to 2018 where he was recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), which awarded him the Prosecutor Award of Excellence in 2014.
In 2018, JR went to work at Fine, Farkash & Parlapiano, P.A. in Gainesville, Florida. There, he specialized in civil litigation, focusing on plaintiff work in bodily injury cases involving motor vehicle accidents, trucking accidents, premises liability, and product liability. He worked to protect the "little guy" from large corporations and big insurance.
Now Jon "JR" Ramsey serves Alachua County as Our County Judge.
